The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of meal recipes way back into distant history, at least as far into history as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these early cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe found, according to academics are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful. As we move on, there were some recipe books from the 1300s : a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, they are not about the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of food prepared by the cooks of the rich and powerful. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods, spices and herbs from the East, including spices such as parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices led to an increase in recipe books, most of which are kept safe in private libraries. During the following few hundred years, the upper-class families of the West competed to offer the best banquets, and as a result chefs and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. By the time we get to the 1900s, cookery publications were in great demand, due to increased literacy, leisure time and having more disposable income. The arrival of television brings us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes just like those on our web site. |
