The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of written recipes far back into ancient history, in truth as far as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, these, old cookbooks were just very simple pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to academics is a collection of ancient tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `blissful`. Later, there were two interesting cookery books which date from the fourteenth century : a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, they are not about the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of meals enjoyed by the rich. For the decades that followed, the rich and powerful families of the West tried to lay on the most exotic meals, and consequentially the best cooks and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe books became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. By the time we get to the 1900s, cookery books were increasing in popularity mostly due to better eduction, people having increased free time and having more disposable income. |
