The History of Recipes

We can follow the history of meal recipes way back into distant history, in fact as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, mostly, these old cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.

In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are some ancient tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful and exhilarated.

Later, there were some books which date from the fourteenth century ; a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these books have no connection with the indian food that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of meals on the menus of the rich and powerful of that period.

Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new foods and spices created an explosion in recipe publications, some of which are kept safe in private collections.

For the centuries that followed, the upper-class families of the West strove to serve up the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipe collections increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to assembling, trying out, and writing down the recipes of their peers.

The arrival of television brings us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as the one you are reading now.
