The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of `recipes` back into history, certainly as far as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, in the main part, these early recipes were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `blissful`. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there are a couple of interesting recipe books which date from the fourteenth century : a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these are not about the indian food that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of food on the menus of the upper classes of the period. During the succeeding few hundred years, the wealthy families of the West competed with each other to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and writing down recipes of the day. By the arrival of the 20th century, cooking books were in high demand, mostly due to more people being able to read, people having increased free time and a general increase in wealth. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site. |
