The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to track the history of recipes back into antiquity, certainly as far back into history as early Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, these, old cookbooks were just very basic pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to food historians are some tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel `wonderful`. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there were two interesting cookery books from the 14th Century ; one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these books are not about the curry that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of food eaten by the rich and wealthy people of those days. Over the next few hundred years, the upper classes tried to lay on the best banquets, and because of this cooks and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe collections really came of age. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. When we get to the 20th century, cookery books are increasing in popularity due to higher levels of literacy, people having more spare time and having more money. The arrival of TV gave us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on our web site. |
