The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of written cooking instructions far back into the distant past, in truth as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, sadly, these early cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
Moving on, there were two interesting recipe books which were published in the fourteenth century - a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these books are nothing to do with the curry that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of meals on the menues of the rich. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from Arab countries, including spices like coriander, basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations caused a surge in publications on food, many of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. The revolution that is television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
