The History of Recipes

We can read the history of meal recipes far back into distant history, at least as far back into history as pharonic Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these old records were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.

In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history is a series of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts describing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his works, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius tells us how the ancient cooks made use of many herbs, including some that we all recognise like bay, mint and parsley.

Later on, we find a couple of interesting books which were published in the 1300s ; a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are nothing to do with the curry that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of food prepared by the chefs of the rich people of those days.

Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and spices from middle-east cuisine, including spices such as rosemary and coriander. These new foods and tastes caused a surge in manuscripts on food, the majority of which are kept safe in private libraries.

For the next few years, the powerful and rich competed with each other to offer the most extravagent banquests, and because of this chefs and their recipe collections increased in prestige. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that formal cookery and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time.

By the advent of the twentieth century, cookbooks are in great demand, as a result of higher levels of literacy, leisure time and a general increase in wealth.

The introduction of the TV gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading.
