The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be traced far back into distant history, certainly as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, these, old recipes were just very basic pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe in existence, according to academics are some stone tablets in Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. During the time of the Romans a roman called Apicius created some scripts describing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, entrees and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. This early Roman chef informs us how the ancient cooks were skilled in the use of many herbs, including some familiar names such as basil, rue and dill. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many spices and herbs from Arab countries, including spices like coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to a surge in manuscripts on cooking, some of which are now in private cookery archives. The arrival of TV gave us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
