The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existence of recipes back into antiquity, in truth as far back as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. Having said that, mostly, these early cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there are two interesting recipe books from the 14th Century - a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these have no connection with the curry that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of meals enjoyed by the upper classes of that period. Over the next few centuries, the powerful families of Europe tried to offer the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipes increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that formal cookery and cookery books became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, trying out, and writing down recipes common in their social group. The introduction of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
