The History of Recipes

It is possible to track the history of written recipes far back into distant history, in truth as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.

In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to academics are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful and blissful.

Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts which described recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, he recounts how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he describes how the ancient cooks made use of many different aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs for example basil, mint and dill.

For the decades that followed, the powerful and rich tried to offer the most exotic banquets, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, trying out, and publishing recipes common in their social group.

By the time we get to the 20th century, cookbooks are starting to become popular mostly due to better eduction, people having more leisure time and having more disposable income.

The arrival of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now.
