The History of Recipes

We can read the history of written recipes back into history, in truth as far back as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, these, old records were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.

Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts are some ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there are a couple of interesting recipe books which appeared in the 1300s : a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these books are unconnected to the indian food that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of food prepared by the chefs of the nobility of that period.

In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and herbs from the holy land, such as basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations caused a torrent in recipe manuscripts, many of which are now in private collections.

Over the following few centuries, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to lay on the most exotic meals, and consequentially cooks and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, trying out, and publishing recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day.

The arrival of TV brought us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as this.
