The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of `recipes` back into history, at least as far back as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. However, sadly, these ancient cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to academics are a few stone tablets in Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `wonderful`. Later, there are two recipe books from the fourteenth century - a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books are not about the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of meals on the menues of the rich and wealthy people of the time. For the decades that followed, the wealthy families of the West competed to offer the best banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe collections became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the time we get to the 1900s, cooking books were in great demand, due to increased literacy, people having increased leisure time and having more disposable income. The arrival of television brought us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
