The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existance of recipes back into ancient history, in fact as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, generally, these early cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
During Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of scripts showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, main meal and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also recounts how the chefs of Roman times used many aromatic flavors, including a few you will know such as thyme, rue and parsley. During the succeeding few hundred years, the rich families of the West strove to serve the most exotic meals, and because of this the best cooks and their recipes were much in demand. However, it was during the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe publications really came of age. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
