The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of recipes way back into antiquity, certainly as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, these, early recipes were just very simple pictorial instructions for preparing food.
In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to food historians are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel exhilarated and blissful. Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a number of documents detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into appetizers, main meal and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius informs us how the cooks of his times made use of a good variety of aromatic flavors, including some familiar names such as bay, rue and dill. For the centuries that followed, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve the most extravagent banquests, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. However, it was during the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe publications rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down popular recipes of the day. The introduction of the TV brings us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
