The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be observed way back into history, at least as far into history as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these ancient recipes were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
During the time of the Roman Empire a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts which described recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were divided into appetizers, entrees and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he describes how the early Romans made use of many aromatic flavours, including a few you will know for example thyme, fennel and asafoetida. Over the following few hundred years, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve up the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that formal cookery and cookery books really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down recipes common in their social group. The introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Creamy Italian Dressing recipe.
