The History of Recipes

It is possible to track the history of `recipes` back into the distant past, certainly as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. However, mostly, these old recipes were just simple pictorial recipes for preparing meals.

In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are a few tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel blissful.

Later, there are a couple of cookery books published in the fourteenth century - a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books have no connection with the curry that is popular today, but rather descriptions of the types of food enjoyed by the rich people of the time.

Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods and spices from the Middle-East, including spices like coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new herbs and spices caused an outbreak in manuscripts on food, many of which still exist in academic collections.

For the decades that followed, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve the most extravagent banquests, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe collections became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down recipes of the day.

The arrival of television brought us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on our site.
