The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be found back into the far past, in truth as far as early Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to historians are a few ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel exhilarated and blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have two interesting cookery books which appeared in the 14th Century ; one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, they have no connection with the spicy food that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of food served to the nobility of the time. Over the following few centuries, the rich families of Wesstern Europe tried to lay on the most extravagent meals, and because of this the best cooks and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. However, it was during the 1800s the formal cooking and cookery books became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, trying out, and publishing recipes of the day. The arrival of TV brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Diatetic Cream Cheese Balls recipe.
