The History of Recipes
Experts have found proof that recipes existed back into the far past, in truth as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. However, these, early recipes were just very basic pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of documents which described recipes cooked by the Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius describes how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, something we still use today. Aspicius also recounts how the Romans were skilled in the use of a wide range of spices, including a few you will know for example basil, mint and parsley. During the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of the West tried to offer the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, cooks and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down the recipes of their peers. The revolution that is television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on this web site. |
