The History of Recipes
Experts have traced the existance of recipes back into ancient history, certainly as far back into history as early Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, generally, these ancient cook books were just simple hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are a few tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. During Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius created some documents detailing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, main course and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. This early Roman chef informs us how the cooks of his times used a good variety of spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like thyme, mint and parsley. During the succeeding few centuries, the rich families of the West competed to serve up the most extravagent meals, and consequentially cooks and their recipe collections were highly sought after. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and cookery books became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, testing, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this Kahlua Vinegar Pie recipe.
