The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of transcribed cooking instructions back into history, at least as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, these, early recipes were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are some clay tablets in Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, there are two recipe books which date from the 1300s : a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these two books are not about the spicy food that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of meals on the menues of the nobility of the period. Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back many spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations led to an increase in books on cooking, the majority of which are now in private libraries. For the centuries that followed, the wealthy families of the West competed to offer the most exotic banquets, and because of this cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cooking and cookery books became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and publishing the recipes of their peers. The introduction of the TV brought us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
