The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to trace the history of written cooking instructions back into history, in fact as far back as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. However, mostly, these early cookbooks were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics is a collection of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel blissful. Closer to modern times, there are some interesting books from the fourteenth century : a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they have no connection with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared for the rich people of the period. During the next few hundred years, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe strove to offer the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Even so, it was during the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe books became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to collating, verifying, and recording recipes common in their social group. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
