The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be found back into history, in fact as far into history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. In practice though, generally, these early recipes were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Later on, in Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius created a collection of scripts which described recipes enjoyed by the Romans. He describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, entrees and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius recounts how the cooks of his times made use of many different aromatic flavours, including a few you will know for example bay, rue and parsley. During the succeeding few hundred years, the rich families of Europe tried to serve up the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipe collections increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe publications became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, trying out, and writing down recipes common in their social group. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Krispie Crunch Candy recipe.
