The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of written recipes far back into the distant past, in fact as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, mostly, these ancient records were just primitive pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of scripts showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius recounts how the chefs of Roman times made use of a good variety of spices and herbs, including many that are still in use today such as bay, fennel and parsley. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from the holy land, including spices such as parsley and basil. The introduction of these new foods and spices prompted an outbreak in recipe books, some of which are kept safe in private libraries. The revolution that is television gave us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
