The History of Recipes

Written recipes as an idea can be observed way back into the far past, certainly as far back into history as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, mostly, these early recipes were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.

In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to food historians is a series of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `blissful`.

Much later, in Roman times a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, entrees and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also recounts how the Romans were skilled in the use of many different herbs and spices, including a few you will know like thyme, rue and parsley.

Over the succeeding few hundred years, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve the best banquets, and because of this chefs and their collection of recipes were at a premium. However, it was during the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe collections really came of age. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, spent years to assembling, verifying, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time.

When we get to the twentieth century, cooking books are highly popular due to higher levels of literacy, leisure time and having more money to spend.

The TV revolution brings us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on our web site.
