The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be traced far back into distant history, in fact as far as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. However, in the main part, these ancient recipes were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals were split into appetizers, main course and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef tells us how the Roman chefs made use of many different spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as basil, mint and dill. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices led to a torrent in manuscripts on cookery, many of which still exist in private cookery archives. The arrival of TV gave us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
