The History of Recipes
We are able to read the history of meal recipes way back into the distant past, in fact as far back into history as early Egypt, and maybe further still. Having said that, in the main part, these ancient records were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are a few ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful and exhilarated. As we move on, there are a couple of books which were published in the 14th Century ; a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they have no connection with the curry that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of food served to the rich people of that time. During the next few centuries, the powerful families of the West strove to serve the most extravagent meals, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipe collections increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that cooking and recipe books became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, spent years to collecting, testing, and publishing popular recipes of the day. By the advent of the 20th century, recipe books are greatly in demand mostly as a result of better eduction, people having more leisure time and a general increase in wealth. The revolution that is television brought us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
