The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to trace the history of recipes back into history, at least as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, generally, these early cookbooks were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts are a few clay tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As we move into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few documents describing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into starters, main meal and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Additionally, he recounts how the Romans used many different aromatic flavours, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example thyme, mint and parsley. During the following few centuries, the wealthy families of the West competed with each other to offer the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. However, it was during the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe publications rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, trying out, and recording recipes of the day. The revolution that is television brought us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
