The History of Recipes

Academics have tracked the existence of recipes far back into ancient history, at least as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, mostly, these ancient recipes were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.

Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful.

During the time of the Roman Empire a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he describes how the Romans used many different herbs and spices, including some familiar names like bay, mint and dill.

Over the following few hundred years, the upper-class families of Europe strove to serve up the most exotic meals, and because of this the best chefs and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day.

Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes like those on our web site.
