The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be traced way back into history, in fact as far back as pharonic Egypt, and potentially, even further back. However, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe found, according to academics are a few ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel blissful and exhilarated. Moving on, we have a couple of cookery books published in the 14th Century - a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books are nothing to do with the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of food prepared by the chefs of the upper classes of the time. During the next few hundred years, the rich families of Wesstern Europe competed to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and as a result the best cooks and their recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that haute cuisine and recipe collections became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording recipes common in their social group. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Lemon Chive Fettuccine recipe.
