The History of Recipes
We are able to follow the history of `recipes` far back into the far past, in truth as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, sadly, these ancient cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to academics are a few clay tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. As we move on, we find two interesting cookery books which appeared in the 1300s - a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these are unconnected to the indian curry that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of food prepared by the cooks of the upper classes of the period. During the following few hundred years, the powerful and rich tried to serve the most exotic meals, and because of this chefs and their recipes were at a premium. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe collections really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes of the day. By the advent of the 20th century, cookbooks are increasing in popularity mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, more spare time and having more disposable income. |
