The History of Recipes
We are able to follow the history of `recipes` back into distant history, in fact as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. However, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `wonderful`. Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled some documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, he describes how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main course and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius also informs us how the ancient chefs used many different aromatic flavors, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example basil, mint and dill. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and spices from Arab cuisine, including coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new spices and herbs prompted a torrent in manuscripts on food, most of which are now in private libraries. When we get to the twentieth century, cookery publications are greatly in demand as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having more spare time and having more money. The TV revolution brings us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
