The History of Recipes
Historians have traced the existance of recipes far back into the far past, certainly as far back as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, sadly, these early recipes were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to food historians are some ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we find two interesting books dating from the 1300s ; a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these have no connection with the spicy food that we all know today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals on the menues of the rich and wealthy people of that time. Over the following few hundred years, the powerful and rich competed with each other to serve the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipe collections could command a high salary. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, spent years to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. By the arrival of the 20th century, cookbooks are in high demand, due to more people being able to read, more free time and having more money to spend. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on our web site. |
