The History of Recipes

Experts have traced the existence of recipes way back into the far past, in fact as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing food.

During the time of the Roman Empire a man called Apicius created some scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Additionally, he informs us how the Roman chefs were skilled in the use of a wide range of herbs and spices, including some that we all recognise like basil, mint and asafoetida.

In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and spices from Arab cooking, including spices like basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices prompted an eruption in publications on food, the majority of which still exist in academic collections.

The introduction of television brings us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on our web site.
