The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to trace the history of transcribed cooking instructions far back into antiquity, certainly as far into history as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, these, ancient cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Closer to modern times, we find a couple of interesting recipe books which appeared in the 14th Century ; a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these have no connection with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of food on the tables of the rich and powerful of the time. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, such as basil and coriander. The introduction of these new herbs and spices prompted an explosion in manuscripts on food, most of which are now in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this web site. |
