The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of written recipes back into the far past, at least as far as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, generally, these old cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts are a few tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As we move into Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of documents describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, he recounts how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef describes how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of many herbs, including many that are still in use today such as thyme, rue and parsley. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and herbs from the holy land, including spices like parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created an eruption in manuscripts on food, many of which still exist in academic collections. By the advent of the 20th century, cooking publications are in high demand, mostly as a result of better eduction, people having increased leisure time and disposable income. The revolution that is television brings us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
