The History of Recipes
Food historians have traced the existence of recipes back into distant history, in truth as far into history as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these old recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to historians are a few clay tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel exhilarated. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have two interesting books dating from the 14th Century - one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these have no connection with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of food prepared by the chefs of the rich and wealthy people of that time. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods, spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, such as coriander, basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes prompted an outbreak in publications on food, most of which still exist in private collections. Over the next few centuries, the upper-class families of Europe competed with each other to serve the best banquets, and because of this cooks and their recipes were greatly in demand. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cookery and recipe books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collating, testing, and recording popular recipes of the day. The introduction of television brings us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site. |
