The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of written recipes back into the distant past, at least as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these early recipes were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
As we move on, there are a couple of interesting books published in the 14th Century ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these two books have no connection with the indian curry that appears on menues today, but rather recipes for the types of meals on the menues of the upper classes. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many foods and spices from the East, including parsley and basil. The introduction of these new herbs and spices led to an explosion in books on cooking, some of which still exist in private libraries. The revolution that is television brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
