The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be observed back into history, at least as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe further still. However, sadly, these early recipes were just simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a number of scripts describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into starters, main course and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. He also tells us how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of a wide range of spices and herbs, including some familiar names for example basil, rue and dill. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from Arab cuisine, including coriander, basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices was responsible for a torrent in books on cookery, some of which are now in private collections. The arrival of TV brought us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this Lovebite Weizenbier recipe.
