The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be found far back into antiquity, in truth as far back into history as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these ancient cook books were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts are some tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. Progressing into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some documents which described recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his publication, he describes how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main course and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius informs us how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of many herbs and spices, including a few you will know such as basil, fennel and parsley. Continuing our culinary historical journey, we find a couple of interesting cookery books which appeared in the 1300s ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are unconnected to the spicy food that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of food on the menus of the rich and powerful of that time. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from the East, including spices such as basil and coriander. These new spices and herbs prompted a torrent in books on cooking, many of which are now in private libraries. When we get to the twentieth century, cook books are increasing in popularity mostly as a result of increased literacy, leisure time and disposable income. The TV revolution gave us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
