1 1/2 cup butter or margarine
2 2/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
4 eggs
2 tsp vanilla
4 1/2 cup flour
2 tsp soda
1 tsp salt
3 cup m&m plain candies
Directions
BEAT TOGETHER THE SUGAR AND MARGARINE UNTIL LIGHT AND FLUFFY. BLEND
IN EGGS AND VANILLA. ADD COMBINED FLOUR, SODA AND SALT. MIX WELL.
STIR IN CANDIES. DROP DOUGH BY HEAPING TABLESPOONFULS ONTO GREASED
COOKIE SHEET ABOUT 3" APART. PRESS 3 OR 4 CANDIES INTO TOP OF EACH
COOKIE. BAKE AT 350 DEG F. FOR 10 TO 12 MINUTES.

The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existence of recipes back into history, certainly as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these old records were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe found, according to historians is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there are a couple of interesting recipe books published in the 1300s : one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are unconnected to the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead accounts of the types of food enjoyed by the rich. Over the next few centuries, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve the most extravagent banquests, and as a result chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing the recipes of their peers. By the arrival of the twentieth century, recipe publications are in high demand, as a result of increased literacy, leisure time and having more money. The introduction of television brought us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this site. |
