The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existance of recipes far back into the far past, at least as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and maybe further still. However, generally, these ancient cook books were just basic pictorial recipes for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are some clay tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As we move into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of documents describing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into starters, main meal and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he describes how the Roman chefs used many different herbs, including some familiar names for example bay, fennel and parsley. Later, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many foods and herbs from Arab cooking, such as parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices led to an eruption in publications on food, many of which are now in private cookery archives. The introduction of television gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like those on the site you are now reading. |
