The History of Recipes
Experts have traced the existance of recipes way back into ancient history, at least as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, mostly, these old recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
As we move on, there were a couple of interesting recipe books which were published in the 1300s ; a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they are unconnected to the indian curry that appears on menues today, but instead recipes for the types of meals served to the nobility of the period. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices such as rosemary and coriander. These new foods and spices was responsible for a torrent in books on cookery, some of which are kept safe in private collections. The arrival of television brings us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
