The History of Recipes
Experts have traced the existance of recipes way back into history, in fact as far back as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, these, old records were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a number of scripts describing recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main meal and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also informs us how the ancient chefs used many spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example bay, mint and dill. Over the following few hundred years, the powerful and rich houses competed with each other to serve the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their recipe collections were highly sought after. However, it was during the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe books became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and publishing recipes of the day. The introduction of television gave us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
