The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to trace the history of written cooking instructions back into antiquity, in truth as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old cook books were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
Closer to modern times, there are a couple of interesting cookery books dating from the 1300s ; a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are not about the curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of meals eaten by the nobility of the time. Later, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, such as parsley and basil. These new spices and herbs prompted an increase in publications on food, most of which are kept safe in private libraries. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
