The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to track the history of recipes far back into the far past, at least as far back into history as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just very simple pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe found, according to experts are some clay tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel blissful and exhilarated. Moving on, we find some recipe books which appeared in the fourteenth century ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these are unconnected to the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but instead accounts of the types of food on the tables of the rich and powerful of the time. During the following few centuries, the families of Europe competed with each other to offer the most extravagent meals, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, verifying, and recording the recipes of their peers. By the advent of the 1900s, cookbooks were in great demand, mostly as a result of increased literacy, people having increased leisure time and disposable income. The revolution that is television gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on the site you are now reading. |
