The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be found way back into the distant past, at least as far into history as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just very simple pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe found, according to experts is a series of clay tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful and exhilarated. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there are some recipe books which were published in the 1300s - a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, they are not about the spicy food that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of food on the menus of the rich and wealthy people of that time. Over the succeeding few centuries, the powerful families of the West competed to offer the most extravagent meals, and as a result chefs and their recipes became highly prized. However, it was during the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collecting, testing, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. When we get to the 20th century, recipe books are in great demand, mostly as a result of increased literacy, increased leisure time and disposable income. |
