The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be observed back into ancient history, in truth as far back as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these early recipes were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
Progressing into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few documents describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the meals were divided into appetizers, main meal and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he informs us how the chefs of Roman times made use of a wide range of herbs and spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like basil, rue and parsley. Over the succeeding few centuries, the upper classes competed with each other to serve up the most exotic meals, and because of this chefs and their recipes were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that fine cookery and cookery books became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. The TV revolution gave us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on our web site. |
