The History of Recipes

It is possible to track the history of meal recipes back into distant history, at least as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. However, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.

In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are some tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `wonderful`.

Later, there are two recipe books published in the 1300s - a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these two books are not about the indian food that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of food prepared by the cooks of the rich and powerful of the time.

For the decades that followed, the wealthy families of Europe competed to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and because of this chefs and their recipes could command a high salary. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe collections became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day.

The arrival of television brought us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site.
