The History of Recipes
We can track the history of written recipes back into the far past, certainly as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, these, early cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to food historians are a few stone tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful. Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of documents detailing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also tells us how the Roman chefs made use of many aromatic flavours, including a few you will know like basil, fennel and dill. For the next few years, the rich families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve up the most exotic banquets, and as a result chefs and their recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s the formal cooking and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. The introduction of the TV brings us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Oyi Namul [Cucumber Salad] recipe.
