The History of Recipes
Historians have found proof that recipes existed back into distant history, certainly as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, generally, these old cook books were just primitive pictorial instructions for food preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe found, according to experts are some clay tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. Closer to modern times, we have a couple of cookery books published in the fourteenth century - a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these two books have no connection with the spicy food that appears on menues today, but instead recipes for the types of meals on the tables of the upper classes of that period. During the succeeding few hundred years, the wealthy families of Europe competed to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes were highly sought after. However, it was during the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe publications rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. By the arrival of the 1900s, recipe books were highly popular as a result of increased literacy, people having increased spare time and disposable income. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes like those on this site. |
