The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of meal recipes far back into distant history, in fact as far back as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. In practice though, in the main part, these early records were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are some clay tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a collection of documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by the Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals were divided into starters, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also recounts how the Roman chefs made use of a wide range of spices, including some familiar names such as thyme, rue and asafoetida. Later, we find some interesting books from the 1300s - a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they are nothing to do with the curry that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich people of the period. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices such as coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes was responsible for a surge in manuscripts on food, the majority of which are now in private cookery archives. The arrival of television gave us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
